The Cornish Blacksmiths Collective recently acquired the workshop tools of the late Major Hugo White, a veteran and dedicated craftsman. This meaningful addition not only enriches the collective with valuable resources but also ensures that Hugo’s tools remain in use, continuing his legacy within the community.
Hugo was a passionate craftsman his whole life, as a child saving his pocket money to buy tools. When he left the army he could finally make the most of his workshop in Padstow and indulge his passion for all things metal and wood.
After Hugo passed his family was seeking a suitable home for his cherished tools and they reached out to the Cornish Blacksmiths Collective, a not-for-profit group focused on preserving and promoting Blacksmithing in Cornwall. They recognized both their practical use and historical significance and accepted the opportunity to preserve and repurpose them.
The acquisition includes a range of essential blacksmithing tools: hammers, tongs and anvil along with other workshop equipment, all well-maintained and bearing the mark of Hugo’s meticulous care. With deep respect for his craftsmanship, the collective’s members carefully inventoried and transported the tools, ensuring they would continue to serve future generations of craftsmen.
“These tools are in excellent working order and will be an invaluable asset to our collective,” said a representative of the group. “We plan to use them for demonstrations, workshops, and to support members who may need specific equipment.”
The tools will be distributed based on needs and upcoming projects. Some will be integrated into educational programs, offering hands-on experience to aspiring blacksmiths, while others will be available to members for individual creative work.
This acquisition is more than just a practical addition, it’s a tribute to Hugo White’s dedication to craftsmanship. By incorporating his tools into their work, the Cornish Blacksmiths Collective not only honours his memory but also strengthens the tradition of blacksmithing in Cornwall, ensuring that his passion for the craft lives on.
